Today’s weather report from heaven: Sunny and bright with an abundance of light, and lots of singing and rejoicing.
Scripture: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”- Hebrews 12:1-2
Insight: I was thinking about the above scripture today and how sin so easily entangles us, as it says in Hebrews 12:1 It is like we are trapped in this goo that keeps pulling us in and we can’t permanently get out. There is a song by Hillsong United called “Christ is Enough,” that I love. It is an anthem of sorts that speaks to the truth that truly Christ is all we need for contentment, peace and joy in this life. There are lyrics that go like this: “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back. The Cross before me, the world behind me, no turning back, no turning back.” I love those lyrics so much and I yearn for them to be true of my faith walk. I want to be free from this world, which is fading away more and more everyday, and be 100% focused just on Jesus. However, we have an enemy that plays against our flesh to keep us entangled in this world. Galatians 5:16-24 speaks to the battle between the Spirit and the flesh that is raging everyday as a Christian.Oh, we can go for long stretches where we are growing and maturing in our faith, and we learn to set aside foolish things and truly focus on Christ, but then the things of this world just keep popping up and slowing our progress. They are like little hindrances, or obstacles, that keep us from being truly free, and so we get entangled with a few toes in the world while the rest of us is running towards the Cross.
The media is a great example of this for me right now. It is infuriating to me how the media has become the enemy of the people, and how they lie, mislead, deceive, distract and divide people in order to fuel their ratings. It is like our media has become one giant Jerry Springer show, wickedly devised in order to sow discord, anger and friction. They are agents of satan, as Ephesians 2:1-2 calls him “prince of the air,” and they are destroying our Country for nefarious purposes, most of which are based around politics and power. But by even listening for a minute or turning on my computer and clicking on an article having anything to do with politics or Covid or crime or anything else keeps me enslaved to this world. It gets my flesh boiling, and in that moment, I am a slave still entangled in this world, instead of being free from it. The enemy of our souls is subtle, and he has a way of keeping us from becoming completely set free, where we could be the truest and best Ambassadors for Christ. I truly am finding it harder and harder to find anything in this world that satisfies other than Christ. He is the solid rock on which we can stand, everything else is just shifting sand.
Prayer: Father God, we live in a broken world where sin runs rampant and where we are constantly in a battle as Christians between our spirit and our flesh. We have an enemy who wants to deceive, distract and destroy as many as possible, and we have a Savior who wants to save as many as possible before the end comes. Those worlds are colliding with more frequency and greater friction all the time. Help us keep our eyes fixed only on You Jesus! Amen!
