Insight: I hear many people today say that the Bible is irrelevant, and that God’s word carries little weight. I couldn’t disagree more! God’s word found in the Bible is always revealing new levels of understanding and continually brings clarity and discernment to every situation. I think with the onslaught of social media, and the ability to influence beliefs and behaviors based on complete lies, the absolute truth found in scripture is more important and relevant today than its ever been. With so many different media inputs vying for our attention, it is hard to know what is real and what is not, unless you can compare it against the foundational truth of the Bible. Without that, it is easy to be led astray. I saw a documentary recently about a completely falsified event called Fyre Festival, that promised people the trip and party of a lifetime. The only problem was it was all a pipe dream and many people spent thousands of dollars only to end up stranded on an Bahamian Island with little food, water or shelter, and no festival. It had all been set up using the allure of partying with famous musicians, super models and social media influencers and other false promotions. You see, we have an enemy in the devil who is the master of allure and deceit, and he always deals in the facades of life that prey on our insecurities and frailties, in this case the need to be important and to be seen as hip and in with the so called A-listers. Only the truth of scripture provides a wisdom which allows us to think clearly and correctly so we can properly discern what is true and not true. Because of the truths of scripture, which according to the verses of the day above, are “alive and active” and also “God breathed” we can be sure that it will never lose relevancy or go out of style.
In a personal way, I am amazed at how many times I pick up the Bible and have a verse of scripture leap off the page and answer a problem or give me clarity and direction in something that is on my mind right at that exact moment. I may have read the verse fifty times before, but its meaning is revealed in a new way at a given moment of time when it is most applicable to my current need or situation. This is an amazing wonder of the living, omniscient nature of God’s word as taught to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. As a 3 layered cake keeps delivering different taste delights and waves of pleasure as we devour new layers, so does scripture constantly bring new meaning and understanding that is applicable to our current situations. So, in fact scripture is not only relevant today, it is the lens through which we must see all other information that we are bombarded with on social media or other platforms on a daily basis, much of which is patently false. It is the light that illuminates the darkness and allows our footsteps to be carefully measured!
