Scripture: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Insight: Here’s a deep thought: What unites us must be greater than what divides us. So, why are we so divided in America? It is leading to our own death by a thousand paper cuts. I was walking through a beautiful Memorial Day Park today, covered in thousands of beautiful American Flags, and reading about fallen heroes who had made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the Country they loved so dearly. I couldn’t help but wonder what the hell had happened? How did we get where we are today, with division and chaos all around us?

Political differences are causing people in America to lose their mind and their humanity all at the same time. Fueled by a divisive, ratings crazed media machine, people are literally being pitted against each other based on what side of the political spectrum they fall. How silly! How dangerous! How sad!  People must always be cognizant of our value as human beings, because of God’s words that tell us so. He created us in “His own image,” and he made us set apart from all other living creatures. One of the ways he made us distinct is He gave us a morality that separates us from other living things. But it is hard to see that today if you watch the news or listen to political commentary. Instead, it is as if our morality has been torn from us and we are treating each other with a lack of morality at best, and with pure evil at worst. However, we must never forget that God is still firmly in control of the Universe and always will be. No one person or Political Party can ever change that. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Prayer is the thing that binds us to our God and as a Nation, we need to continue to pray more than ever for our Country to be united, not divided, and to be compassionate, not hostile, towards those who think differently than we do. A Nation that prays together, stays together. We need to be on our knees and give thanks that though the political winds blow, and the media gets hysterical with their need to be heard, God never changes, as Hebrews 13:5 says. He is the Harbor in the tempest and we need to stay connected to Him more than ever through the power of prayer.

Our Nation has a President who was elected almost 2 years ago to guide us as a Country, and many people are obviously unhappy about that choice, but unless we are allowing God to be in firm control of our ship as a Nation, we will fail in our pursuits no matter who our President is. Our Nation still has a lot of praying to be done, maybe more so than ever, because we have turned our back on the One who made us great as a Country in the first place. Unless we restore him to His rightful place in our Country collectively and in our hearts individually, we will at best receive a temporary reprieve from His judgment.

It is a time for a new day in America, one that gets back to our Judeo/Christian roots, praising God for the freedoms and blessings He has bestowed upon us. I view the current discord and divisiveness sown by political differences, as a great opportunity for a new spiritual revolution, led by peacemakers who can help us overcome our differences and unite us back in the glory to God. For that is what is needed and that is what will ultimately determine our future. 2 Chronicles 7:14 above points to the conditions that God has laid forth in order for a Country to be blessed. There are four things he requires of his people and by extension a country if it wishes to be under His hand of protection: they must humble themselves, pray, seek His face and turn from their wicked ways. If a Country does this, He promises to “hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.”

We must move first and then God will keep His promises, as He always does and always will. He wants to bless us but as is true with any conditional promise, it is based on us, as His people, taking the first step. So yes, America is sadly divided and deranged about politics, but God always gets the final say. I pray for our Nation to pray more than ever before at this time. We must remember that we are One Nation, under God, indivisible and with liberty and justice for all. Only that can ultimately solve our problems and help restore our once great Nation. Peacemakers are desperately needed. Stand strong for unity, not division, and our Country can begin to heal.

Prayer: Lord God, help our Country to heal from our divisions, for we admit we have lost our way. We have allowed a ratings driven media to divide us along political lines and as a result we have lost our humanity and our morality along the way. We must remember who we are in Your loving eyes and begin the process of uniting based on a common goal of finding value in every human being. We pray for wisdom and your mighty hand of power to be on our Nation and to begin the healing process as we lead from our knees, praying fervently before your throne. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen!
