Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright, with an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Bible verse of the day:  Mark 8:29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

Insight: Jesus spent a lot of time with His Disciples, by most accounts a little over three years, and yet they still often were confused about who exactly Jesus was. They saw him make the blind see, the deaf hear and the mute speak; He fed the multitudes with 5 loaves and 2 fish, and there was still plenty left over. He calmed the storms and walked on the water, and yet they still didn’t fully grasp who Jesus was. That is until one day when Jesus was walking with them, and He directly confronted them with this question from Mark 8:29 above “who do you say I am?” Peter then answered “You are the Messiah.” Wow! Peter had gotten it right, and Jesus used this moment to affirm Peter and to let Him know that He had a huge plan for his. Matthew 16:17-19 sums up the new identity Jesus bestowed on Peter because of his bold testimony about Jesus’ true identity: “Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Peter had a lot of faults as one of Jesus’ disciples. He was impetuous, impatient, arrogant and sometimes clueless. But when it came to answering the most important question of all, Peter nailed it. Peter had believed deep in his soul that Jesus was the Messiah, the Christ, the Savior of Israel and the Immanuel that had been prophesied about from all the prophets of old. Thus, with this one declaration, Peter had begun a journey that would lead to many triumphs and also some large humiliations. He was the one that Jesus chose from that day forward “to build His church upon, and the gates of Hades would not overcome it.”

The question that Jesus asked, and that Peter answered so boldly, and so correctly is the same one Jesus is going to ask each one of us at some point in our lifetime: “Who do you say that I am.”

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You make it clear to all who seek You that You are the Messiah, the Savior of the World. You do not hide yourself from us, in fact You freely reveal your identity to all who seek You, ask You and knock on Your door, as Matthew 7:7 proclaims. Who do i say You are? Like Peter, i say You are the Messiah, without a shadow of a doubt.
