Scripture“who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. “ 1 Timothy 6:16

Insight: We know we are living now in a time where there is great darkness and evil living amongst us on the earth as a result of our sin and our rebellion towards God. But that time will not last forever. There is a future coming when darkness will no longer be able to enter into the light. God’s light will simply blot out all darkness. CS Lewis, in his book Mere Christianity, paints a beautiful picture of the glory of light and power that surrounds the throne room of God. He says that God’s presence is like a “great fountain of energy and beauty spurting up at the very center of reality. If you are close to it, the spray will wet you. If you are not, you will remain dry. Once a man is united to God, how could he not live forever. Once a man is separated from God, what can he do but wither and die.” The image of God on His throne is defined above in 1 Timothy 6:16 as “unapproachable light.” Every time I stop to ponder what that must be like, although I am limited by the very limits of my own imagination, it fills me with awe, wonder and anticipation about what it will actually be like to be present in God’s eternal kingdom. I like to think of the brightest sunshine on a cool, crisp, cloudless day and then ponder that the image in my mind can’t even begin to compare to the glory of the light that surrounds God’s presence.

We live in a dark and broken world, but that has in no way diminished the light that God is pouring out from His throne, available to all of us who are willing to seek His presence. The battle is always raging between darkness and light, but God’s light prevails over the darkness in the end. Chris Tomlin, in the song “How Great is our God” sings, “He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide. It trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice.”  The scripture in Revelation 21:23 gives us another glimpse of how much beauty and pure light there will one day be as God established His eternal kingdom back on this earth when it says “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Imagine if you can what that will be like. God himself as the only source of light, shining so bright and powerfully through His Son Jesus that there is no longer a need for the Sun. Revelation 22;5 confirms this when it declares,
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” Let that lift your spirits as you contemplate the greatness of our God.
