Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright, with an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.
Scripture- “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”- John 13:3-7
Insight: Lessons are better caught than taught. Has any human ever exemplified humility better than Jesus when He washes his disciples’ feet? Sometimes I think we overlook the magnitude of stories told or lessons taught in the Bible. The lesson of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet at the Last Supper seems to me to be one of those instances. I mean how many of us would ever consider an act of such humility as one of our last acts on this earth? Washing feet was a task left to the lowliest servants in a household and was seen as a woeful assignment. But yet Jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, sees fit to make this a great lesson to teach his disciples about putting no one or nothing above their call to service in His name. He didn’t just teach this lesson to them, he made sure they caught it because of the timing and magnitude and intimacy of the lesson. Jesus knew that Judas would soon betray him, and yet He even takes the time to wash his feet. Imagine the guilt and shame Judas must have felt as Jesus was washing his feet?
I wonder how we would react to a stranger who offers to wash our feet. It would be awkward at best and downright uncomfortable at worst. Yet Jesus felt compelled to do this for his very friends, His Disciples He had walked on earth with for over 3 years. His humility is shocking and hard for us to understand. But we must learn to pray for wisdom and discernment in order to align our hearts with the heart of our Lord and Savior, who saw no task, not even the washing of feet, to be below him. Oh, how many times have I failed, because of my false pride, my ego and my wrong thinking in being as humble as Jesus was and is. Even when I try to be good, I often operate out of a fear based posture that seeks to protect my best interests first. Jesus never thought like that. His whole ministry was about loving God and loving others above himself to give His Father in Heaven all the glory. May I learn to “catch” the lessons Jesus taught so they can be applied in my life. Many times my fishing line is empty. Sometimes the lessons are so hard for us to learn and apply. Help me Lord Jesus to put You first in all things.
Prayer: Father God, have mercy on my soul for the many times I have fallen short of emulating the humility that Jesus illustrated to His Disciples, including even his betrayer Judas, when he washed their feet. Oh, the guilt Judas must have felt for his coming betrayal of the One who was on bent knee before him, humbly washing his feet. To some degree, we are all guilty when we fail to be humble in our interactions with others. Help us to be more like Jesus, we pray in His mighty name. Amen!
