Weather report from heaven: Sunny and bright with an abundance of light, and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Scripture:  “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”- James 1:5

Insight: As we continue on with our series on Practical Christianity, today we take a look at a subject we all really need a ton of in order to survive in this world and that is wisdom. The good news is the Bible talks alot about wisdom and teaches us how we can receive it from God and put it into practice in our own lives. I heard on the car radio once a Pastor say that “real wisdom is keeping yourself out of situations that require it.” I think that is true and a great statement, however I have found that often I need the wisdom directly from God  because I am incapable on my own of being able to navigate the plethora of traps that the enemy lays for us to ensnare us, which causes our lives to suffer. Just see Genesis 3 as the greatest reminder of how cunning the sly serpent really is. He uses doubt of God and His Word to cause the fall of man in the Garden. So, yes we need wisdom but luckily we know where to find it. God doesn’t withhold it from us and He wants us to trust Him and His wisdom freely given to us to navigate the rocky terrain of this life.

The Book of Proverbs has 55 references to wisdom and Ecclesiastes has 25. These are two of my favorite sources from scripture of wisdom that we can practically apply to our lives and they come from King Solomon who by most accounts was one of the wisest and richest people who ever lived. One of the main tenets of Solomon’s teaching on wisdom is to get wisdom! In other words to seek it, because it is more valuable than gold, silver or rubies. Here are a few of my favorite verses from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes that we should meditate on as often as possible:The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get understanding.”- Proverbs 4:7  “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!”- Proverbs 16:16  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”- Proverbs 9:10  “I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.”- Ecclesiastes 2:13  “Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it.”- Ecclesiastes 7:12  “Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city.”- Ecclesiastes 7:19

These verses above are just a start but show us the power of God’s word in helping us to not only learn to obtain wisdom via scripture, but also how to learn to apply it to our daily lives. God wants to protect us and keep us from being deceived and one of the best ways He does this is by offering us His wisdom in the pages of the Bible. We are wise if we learn to seek this free gift as the great treasure that it is.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for making available to us all the wisdom of the ages that is freely given to us in the pages of the Bible. Let us passionately seek it as a way to help us live life to the fullest and avoid some of the harm that comes upon us because of our own foolishness. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen!
