Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright, with an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Scripture- “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.  Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42

Thought: Good is sometimes the enemy of great. How easy it is to forget this or to settle for something less than God’s best. I love this scripture above from Luke 10:38-42 because it helps to remind me how good can be the enemy of great. In the story above, what Martha is doing is good; she is preparing the food for a celebration of Jesus’s arrival to their house. But what Mary is doing is great, just spending time at the feet of Jesus and just listening to his teaching and enjoying being in his presence. Jesus makes it very clear to Martha when Martha complains that her sister Mary isn’t helping enough in preparing the party, that while what she is doing is good, what Mary is doing “is better and it will not be taken away from her.”

So, the main point of the story is how we allow distractions to steal our alone time in the presence of Jesus. Treasure is much nearer than we think, but we are all restless until we find that God is our real treasure.  We allow good to become the enemy of great. So, the next step is to ask ourselves what do we allow to distract us? How many “good” things in our life crowd out the “great” things of being in the presence of Jesus. That should always be our top priority as that is where we find grace, healing, strength, wisdom, patience, forgiveness, redemption and renewal. So here are a few things that distract me: The media, busyness, worrying, popularity, other’s opinions, impatience, money, distracted thoughts, emotions etc. It takes discipline to say no to lesser things, so we can enjoy the huge benefits of spending time in the presence of the King of Glory. May we always remember that good can be the enemy of great when it comes to how we choose to spend our time.
