Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright,  h an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Scripture-  “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” – Joshua 24:15

Thought of the day- We all serve somebody or something, whether we know it or not. The legendary singer Bob Dylan wrote a famous song about it called “Gotta serve somebody,” and the lyrics to the song are very powerful and intuitive. Here is a small sample: “You may be an ambassador to England or France. You may like to gamble, you might like to dance. You may be the heavyweight champion of the world. You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls. But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” Yes, Bob Dylan is right, we are all going to serve somebody so the question is, who are you going to serve? The answer will have a huge impact on the outcome of your life.

Who do you serve? That question rang out in my head just now when thinking about this verse above from the Book of Joshua. Joshua knew who it was he and his household were serving, it was the Lord Almighty. There were no gray areas in Joshua’s life. That gave him a sense of purpose, discipline and energy in how he lived his life, and his life had great impact as a result. In this present age, we have so many different things pulling at us for our attention, that it can be easy to become distracted or sidetracked from our bigger life purpose. I have at various times served money, served pride, served pleasure, served work, served fear, served selfishness, served ingratitude. In hindsight, none of these things were necessarily intentional, but were more of a result of not remaining laser focused on God being the center of my attention. When I get distracted from God as my center, all lesser things vie for my attention. It is so easy to get distracted by the media’s polarizing, politicized agenda or the theatrics of office politics in the workplace, or the ebbs and flows of personal relationships. But when like Joshua I firmly and resolutely face each day with the mantra of today, me and my household will serve the Lord, my days go much better. How about you? Have you been serving lesser things instead of the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent God of the Universe, made available to us through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? If so, try a new strategy of putting God first and see if that doesn’t yield better results.
