Scripture- “God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’- Exodus 3:14

Insight:  One thing that I think we all could agree on at this present time is that there are many problems in the world today. From wars and rumors of wars, to financial shocks and disruptions in global supply chains, to a lack of trust in most media, healthcare and government institutions throughout the world, the world seems very fragile. We want to see things fixed and so we are apt to try to play God’s advisor and let Him know what He should do in order to solve some of the biggest problems we face. I was just lashing out like a fool on a subject that really irks me just this last week. We are all guilty of this at some time or another. But how foolish this is. But we must be aware that if it is a continuing or systemic issue, then it’s indicative or a real big problem in our faith walk and that is we really don’t trust God! We are not aligned with our words and actions if we say we trust God and yet always want to play His advisor or give him some help. God is God and nothing is a surprise to Him. He is fully in control, even when we in our ignorance and insane egotistical pride plead that He isn’t seemingly doing it right and He really needs our help. In our social media frenzy driven world, many are constantly playing the role of God’s advisor. But they can never even know what they don’t know, and can never see what only He sees. Read Isaiah 55:8-9 to see how big a chasm exists between us and God. When thinking about this subject today, it reminded me of the need to invoke the serenity prayer often to keep us properly aligned: “Lord, grant me the courage to change those things that i can, the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference between the two.”

It is truly a fearful and prideful thing to assume God needs our help or somehow we know better than Him. That is why I love the exchanges that take place in Exodus when Moses was arguing with God about him not being “qualified” or the right one to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. Little did he know, God always uses the “unqualified” to accomplish His plan, so He gets the rightful glory only He deserves. Basically. God’s answer is perfect in Exodus 3:14 about how Moses should answer his own people when they ask who has sent him to lead them out of Egyptian bondage: God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.” I Am is the name for God that is all powerful, all knowing and all existing and the Jews knew this name well. God was telling the Israelites through Moses to basically not question Him and to do what He says. He says the same thing today to me, you and whoever else tries to give him advice: “I am God and You are not. So shut up and follow me. I don’t need your help, but you sure do need mine.” God doesn’t need advisors. His timing is perfect and His ways are always best. Our job is to live out Proverbs 3:5-6, even when we don’t understand: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart  and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Prayer: God help us to never get in a position of such a prideful mindset where we try to act as your advisor. Help us to always remember that we are the clay and You are the Potter. You can do whatever You wish with us. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen!
