Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright, with an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Scripture-  “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”- Psalm 27:4

“The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”- Psalm 34:10

Insight: As we continue our look into the lessons of King David, and why he was the only person ever called “a man after God’s own heart,” in Acts 13:22, we need to consider why God said that about him. We have considered many aspects of David’s life to see what made him so fervent in his relationship with God. One area we can consider today is how he always sought the Lord, and often he went to places alone to be one on one with God and to pray to him in solitude. I think David was constantly seeking the Lord in every situation in his life, trying to gain wisdom and discernment by merely being in God’s presence and seeking Him always. This takes discipline and the ability to say “no” to lesser pursuits. This is very true today in our “always on” technology fueled world. We must be disciplined in order to carve out alone time with God and to seek Him in solitude. But this is a discipline that always pays huge dividends. It was just as much a sacrifice for David as it is for us today, because he was King of Israel and was constantly needed to make very important and consequential decisions. Yet, he still placed the highest value in spending time with God. He placed that above all else. The question we must ask ourselves then is do we also have this type of alignment in our life? Do we carve out time each day to be alone with God, even if it’s just a few minutes? If not, we need to try to incorporate that into our lives and see how our lives are impacted for the better.

David had a desperate approach to his need for God. He expressed that in many of his Psalms, including the ones above and also in Psalm 14:2 which says “The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.” We should consider this good advice from David that we seek the Lord in all we do. Even Jesus needed alone time with God the Father and often withdrew from the crowds to be alone with Him: Mark 1:35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Luke 5:16 “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” David models so many great traits for us in our faith walk, and one is alignment in his words and actions. It’s easy to say you seek the Lord, but David carved out time to actually be alone in His presence so his words and actions aligned.. Do you do this today? If we want to experience God in a more personal and intimate way, then I believe we should follow David’s lead and truly seek Him above all else and find time to be alone with Him. Then, our goal is to be like the Psalmist in Psalm 42:1-2 which says “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” This then begs the question we must consider: Does your soul pant for God? David’s did and it’s probably one of the main reasons he was called “ a man after God’s own heart.” May it be true of us as well.

Prayer: Father God, help us to find time to be with you in solitude and to truly seek you above all things. Grant us the discipline to take time out of our days to make you our highest priority, seeking you above all things. You are worthy of all of our time and efforts. Amen!
