Scripture: “The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.” – Psalm 10:16

Insight: We can learn so much from the Biblical Heroes like King David, who is the only person in the Bible ever referred to as “a man after God’s own heart,” Acts 13:22. God led David through a myriad of different circumstances that tested his faith, grew him, challenged him and led him to become the greatest King of Israel and the human bloodline out of which Jesus himself was born. Therefore, we just should pay close attention to the life of David recorded in the Bible and try to learn as much as we can from him and apply it to our lives in a practical way. We will study some of the Scriptures over the next 30 days that David wrote and see how his life is a great teaching moment for us today. David wrote half of the Psalms, which serve as a journal for his faith walk with the Lord.

In today’s Psalm 10:16, we see David focusing on a critical point of perspective that is just as true today as it was when he wrote it thousands of years ago. David recognized the eternal nature of God and of our existence and he often compared that with the fate of nations, which he knew would rise and fall all the time. God ordains our time on earth as individuals and He does the same for nations. The only Nation that God promises a special covenant relationship with and that He promises to protect for all time is Israel. Israel is God’s Holy Land and the place where Jesus will one day return to rule the entire earth with justice and peace for all eternity. All other nations are temporary, and they rise and fall as the Lord decrees. Revelation 21:2 and 21:10 both speak to Jerusalem as the “ Holy City,” where Jesus will reign from: 21:2  “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” 21:10 “And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.” David had eternity in his heart and that gave him the perspective he needed to endure the trials of his life. That same perspective is needed now in our lives, especially in the ‘always on’ hyper time pressurized world in which we live today. We can get swept away in the torrent of “now” pressure instead of gaining perspective from the eternal perspective if we’re not careful. Time is always our most valuable commodity, but time perspective is gained only through seeing our lives the way God does, which is from an eternal perspective. In 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 the Apostle Paul exhorts us to have that same mindset when he says: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” We were made for more than just our short time on this earth. David understood that and we can learn a lot from his perspective on time.

Prayer: Lord God, thank you that You created us for more than just this life. You built eternity into our hearts, as Ecclesiastes 3:11 proclaims. Help us to keep that perspective in mind when we are feeling immense time pressure in our life. We have an eternity to get it worked out. We pray in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
