Weather Report From Heaven: Sunny and bright, with an abundance of light and lots of singing and rejoicing.

Scripture- “These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.  For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”- 1 Corinthians 2:10-14

Insight:  Yesterday we talked about the value of seeking God in order to obtain wisdom, and how God values wisdom above all else. So much so, that He promises those who seek wisdom will find it, and He will bestow upon those people influence. God wants to use His people, who seek to obtain Godly wisdom by spending time in His presence, as influencers in the world. We saw this with King Solomon, who became the wisest and then the wealthiest person in maybe all of human history. But notice alignment matters greatly in God’s plan. First Solomon became wise by spending time in God’s presence, then he became wealthy, and then influential.

Today, we are going to go even a step further and look at the role that discernment plays in helping us understand God’s desires for our life. Discernment is directly linked to wisdom, and thus God tells us in the Scriptures above from 1 Corinthians 2:10-14 that true understanding comes from discernment, which comes from the Holy Spirit. Notice in verse 14 it says that true discernment comes only through the Holy Spirit and without it, people are unable to truly discern the ways of God:  “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” In today’s politically correct environment, this would be lambasted as narrow minded and bigoted. But one thing I’ve noticed in my life is it’s not very productive to argue with God. You can’t fact check the Creator of the Universe. When God says it’s true, we are much better off to accept it, and then figure out what we need to do to align with His Word. In John 14, Jesus explains that He must go away but He will not leave His followers behind as Orphans. Rather ,He will provide them with the Holy Spirit, who will be with them wherever they go. He will counsel and teach them all things, so that they can discern the will of God in all situations. In verses 25-26 He says “All this I have spoken while still with you.  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” So you can see how things all work together for our benefit. We need discernment to understand the will of God and to obtain wisdom by reading the Scriptures and by praying to God and being in His presence. Jesus left us who believe in Him the presence of the Holy Spirit by which we can understand these things. Now it is up to us. Do you really want what He is offering? If so, you will benefit greatly from obtaining wisdom and being able to discern God’s desires for your life. You most likely will gain influence as a result. But like any good and healthy relationship, it will require time and commitment. The choice is yours. God will never force you to do something you don’t want to do, but the consequences will be slugging your way through this life without the ability to truly discern and understand Godly things, and to lack the wisdom that can only come through Him.

Prayer: Father God, thanks that You love us so much that You have provided a way for us to be in on what You are doing and to be able to discern Your will and ways through wisdom gained, and understanding that comes to us through the Holy Spirit so our lives are full of meaning and influence. Amen!
